New Brunswick police are asked why some establishments, like two bars in Saint John, are advertising poker events and remain open despite the fact that unregulated gambling is a crime in the area. The fact is, the police are more concerned about other crimes than unregulated card playing. However in Moncton bars are seeing members of the Codiac Royal Canadian Mounted Police who are investigating reports of illegal card games.
The problem, say Canadian charities, is that this sends a mixed message that leaves them in the dark. They don’t know whether or not they are breaking the law when they put charity events hosting Texas Hold’em poker events, which are great charity fund raisers. With such an unclear atmosphere when it comes to law enforcement, local charities are unsure what the new year will bring. |
